For the second year in a row, friends and family and a few strangers looking for a fun time have gathered to show support for Brian O’Neil. Live music, great food, and a silent auction were all part of the fun that enticed people from Southern Anne Arundel country and beyond to come out and show support for a great cause.
   In 2010 Brian was diagnosed with a non-cancerous arachnoid cyst that needed an operation to relieve pressure on his brain. Complications arose and during the operation Brian suffered a stroke, leaving him debilitated and in need of support from family and friends. Event coordinators Jean McKenzie and Anthony Jett came up with a plan to help raise money for Brian and his family to help offset the costs of his medical treatment and rehabilitation. And what better way to help raise some funds than to hold an event where everyone can come together and show support while having a great time?
   I spoke with Jean McKenzie about the impact that the event has for Brian and his family.  “Last year we raised $39,000 dollars. The money we raised was enough for 6 months of back bills and for 16 months of various treatment and medication. It also helped with transportation for visits to the doctor and to help offset various other costs that help Brian and his family.” Jean explained.  When asked how the show of support is received by his family Jean says, “They are overwhelmed by the support and are very humbled.”
   This year’s event was off to a promising start with a large gathering of around 200 attendees showing up for the festivities. But the weather soon turned sour and a large storm was blasting towards the entire east coast. The clouds rolled in and winds picked up force and an early closing seemed imminent. Tents flew through the air and people were forced to leave early due to dangerous conditions no doubt hurting this year’s funding goals. There is still a way that the money can be raised.
